DIY Potato Starch

Uses & benefits of potato starch

  • rice starch may be used in cosmetic preparations like hair shampoo, skin creams and soaps.

Steps for making potato starch

  1. Peel, cube and wash potatoes.
  2. Blend with plenty water.
  3. Catch the water while straining the mixture with a fine fabric. The water being caught contains the starch.
  4. Add more water to the fiber and repeat the straining process until you have extracted as much starch, evident by a 'cloudy' appearance of the water.
  5. Discard the solid that remains in the strainer.
  6. Wash the starch several times until the water becomes clear. To do this, wait for the starch to settle stiffly at the bottom of the container before discarding the water. Stir in fresh water and then wait for the starch to settle again before repeating the process.
  7. Dry the wet starch over a baking tray in the sun, oven or in a dehydrator.
  8. Blend the dried clumps of starch in a grinder until a fine powder.
