Benefits sought from natural deodorant
- lead-free deodorants
Process for making deodorant
- Melt fats and fat soluble ingredients
- Slowly incorporate powders while fats are still warm and until all ingredients are homogenized
- When cooler but still liquid, add essential oils
- Pour
Combine the ingredients in the following order at room temperature.
- powder, volumetric 2 parts.
- neutralizes odor-causing bacteria and or other detoxifying properties. Some common skin bacteria that produce body odor include members of Corynebacterium, Staphylococcus and Cutibacterium genera.
- zinc ricinoleate. 1-3%. Good for sensitive skin, It is modified from natural ingredients but often called 'natural'. it chemically neturalizes odors. fat soluble. Game changer.
- Magnesium hydroxide, Mg(OH)2. (This is the main ingredient in the laxative milk of magnesia.) not irritating or sensitizing. Safe for sensitive skin. Very commonly used in 'natural' / non-toxic / non-harmful cottage industry. More effective than baking soda.
- baking soda. drying & irritating, especially for sensitive skin, including after long-term use despite non-sensitizing use during the short-term. Can darken armpits in some case. See good non-irritating alternatives to baking soda.
- Diatomaceous earth. It also draws out toxins and heavy metals.
- zinc oxide. Also healing (for broken skin). Antiseptic. Less effective than baking soda. More of a white cast on black clothes than baking soda. However, the white cast miraculously disipated.
- clays (Bentonite, Kaolin). fears of containing lead which can be absorbed through the skin. Bentonite and Kaoline clays can detoxify the body. However, bentonite is more effective in this regard.
- absorbent. Consider how the starches compare with other starches regarding absorbency, when 1 is most absorbent and 4 is the least. 1. cornstarch, 2. arrowroot 3. tapioca 4. potato.
- cornstarch. The most absorbent among arrowroot, tapioca starch and potato starch. is sensitizing for some people.
- arrowroot, Less of a white cast on black clothes than kaolin clay or corn starch. Smoother, without texture as baking soda which is slightly gritty. Less likely to cause allergic reactions (than corn and potato starches). It draws out toxins from the body.
- potato starch. Works well and may draw out toxins.
- tapioca starch. Works well. There is no perceived risk of absorbing toxins known to exist in fresh cassava root because of the process of making the starch. However, if you are concerned, consider another of the starches.
- hard fats, 1 part
- palm kernel oil. Antibacterial. Seems unlikely to stain fabric.
- coconut oil. Antibacterial. Coconut oil may stain clothes over time.
- shea butter
- zinc ricinoleate. (see details above)
- Solidifier / hard deodorant stick-making hard fats. Fat-soluble. Consider using solidifiers like waxes to replace roughly half of the absorbent ingredient (like starch).
- cetyl alcohol. non-comedogenic. unlikely to cause allergic reactions. (derived from natural fats and oils).
- magnesium stearate. at apx 30%. Helps product to glide onto the arm pits, fights odor, no greasy residue. (an insoluble, non-lathering, non-cleaning soap. Insoluble soaps that is also what is in soap scum).
- stearic acid. low comedogenic rating with slight potential to clog pores.
- Optional
- antioxidant (to prevent rancidity)
- essential oil, antibacterial, apx 3.5% by weight of recipe, keeping sensitizing oils to their limits (like keeping peppermint oil to 1%).
- frankincense
- lime
- orange
- pine. Ideal for heavier sweat. Combines well with black pepper and lavender.
- peppermint
- tea tree
- solar plexus and antibacterial: lemongrass,
citronella(lung damage reports), mint, lemon
Attempt: Soft paste
- 0.5 part ZnO
- 1.5 part Arrowroot
- 1 part PKO

- 0.75 part PKO
- 1 part cetyl alcohol
