How to make anti-aging facial moisturizer (with shea butter, coconut oil and grapeseed oil)

This is one of the ways that I make my own anti-aging facial moisturizer. It is best used on clean, damp skin to lock in the moisture. Its main ingredients, shea butter, coconut oil and grapeseed oil offer several health benefits for the skin.

Benefits of shea butter for skin
  • Shea butter reduces premature facial lines, dark spots, marks, stretch marks, scars, chapped lips
  • Shea butter has natural antioxidants that fight signs of aging in the skin
  • Shea butter is an intense skin moisturizer
  • Shea butter improves the elasticity of the skin for a more youthful appearance
  • Shea butter is high in essential fatty acids

Benefits of grapeseed oil for skin
  • Grapeseed oil is a powerful antioxidant that fights premature aging in the skin (to an extent that is greater than vitamins C and E)
  • Grapeseed oil is a natural sunscreen that fights premature aging in the skin
  • Grapeseed oil is light weight
  • Grapeseed oil fights acne
  • Grapeseed oil improves the elasticity of the skin for a more youthful appearance

Benefits of coconut oil for skin
  • Coconut oil repairs damaged skin
  • coconut oil is an effective moisturizer on all types of skins. This includes dry skin.
  • coconut oil is comparable with mineral oil but without potential adverse side effects on the skin. Coconut oil is therefore a safe natural substitute for mineral oil
  • coconut oil delays wrinkles and sagging of skin
  • Coconut oil treats several skin problems that include psoriasis, dermatitis and eczema
  • Coconut oil has antioxidant properties that help to prevent premature aging and degenerative diseases

WHAT YOU NEED TO MAKE MY ANTI-AGING FACIAL MOISTURIZER
  • Unrefined shea butter (at room temperature)
  • Unrefined coconut oil (at room temperature)
  • Grapeseed oil
  • Optional natural ingredients used to make anti-aging face moisturizer:
    • Zinc oxide (as a full spectrum sun block for skin. Just under 1/3 the combined volume of shea butter, coconut oil and grapeseed oil used. However, note that this natural physical sun block creates a white shield that becomes more visible with the amount of it that is added).
    • Beeswax (as a shield against harsh environmental factors and to seal in moisture)
    • Olive / almond oil
    • Jojoba oil
    • Essential oils (lavender oil)
  • Hand held mixer, whisk or fork
  • Mixing bowl
  • Sterile plastic bag
  • Storage jar. If you have any, use the beautiful empty containers of store bought skin care products.
  • Scissors

INSTRUCTIONS FOR MAKING MY ANTI-AGING FACIAL MOISTURIZER
  1. Liquefy the coconut oil before combining it with shea butter. Coconut oil liquefies at room temperature. If it is solid, expose the coconut oil to gentle heat. For instance, place the coconut oil container into a bowl of warm water or place it on a warm counter. I put my solid coconut oil on the kitchen counter close to my electric kettle.
  2. Gradually add coconut oil, grapeseed oil and other ingredients to the shea butter before combining. Add these ingredients while considering the desired consistency of your anti-aging face moisturizer. The oils will produce a smoother consistency that will allow you to easily spread otherwise solid shea butter over your face.
  3. To get your homemade shea butter / coconut oil face moisturizer to go neatly into a container, do the following. Put your homemade facial moisturizer into a sterile plastic bag. Squeeze the facial moisturizer into a single corner of the bag. Create a hole by cutting off the tip of that corner. This will allow you to squeeze the face moisturizer neatly into your container.
  4. Immediately after washing, cleaning and toning your skin, apply your anti-aging facial moisturizer on damp skin to lock in the moisture. It is not a good idea to apply moisturizer on dry or wet skin. If you apply moisturizer onto dry skin, you may lock out the moisture. If you apply moisturizer onto wet skin, your new anti-aging moisturizer may slip off of your face.
    1. Place a small amount (the size of a pea) of your homemade anti-aging moisturizer onto the palm of your hands. To get a small amount, you may use a tiny spatula if your storage container does not have a pump.
    2. Very gently rub your palms together about 2 to 3 times only, just to warm and spread the anti-aging facial moisturizer. This is useful to ensure that you apply a thin layer of moisturizer.
    3. Do not worry about not applying enough anti-aging face moisturizer onto your face. (You do NOT want to have too much anti-aging face moisturizer on your face. Using too much moisturizer on your face may look oily and block your pores.)
    4. Start to apply the anti-aging moisturizer to the drier parts of your face, usually your cheeks
    5. Remember to apply moisturizer to your neck and chest. However, this moisturizer may be too rich for the thin skin around your eyes.
  5. If you also need to apply makeup or sunblock to your skin, do so only AFTER your facial moisturizer has dried.
