Barley Water for Kidney Health

Consuming barley can improve your kidney health. For instance, it has been known to treat kidney stones, inflammation in the kidneys, swelling in the kidneys, edema (specifically swelling in the legs as a result of poor kidney function), to enhance creatinine clearance and to improve kidney filtration. Furthermore, barley water is also used to prevent water retention (during pregnancy) and urinary tract infections. In fact, it is even safe for babies above 8 months old.

Below illustrates one way in which you can prepare and use barley water to improve kidney health.

To Make 1 Batch of Barley Water to Improve Kidney Health, you will need the following
    • 1 cup whole pearl barley (use the powder only if you have no other option)
    • 5 cups water
    • Optional for taste
      • ginger, very thinly sliced pieces of fresh, organic, roughly the size of your thumb
      • cinnamon, sticks
      • raw, organic honey
      • the juice of a lime, roughly 1/2 lime
    • a means of boiling the barley. Barley should be soaked and cooked before being consumed. After all, the very high fiber content may be difficult for some persons to bear.
    • a refrigerator if you make more than 1 batch of barley water. Barley can not keep well for over 2 to 3 days in the refrigerator.

To Make Barley Water to Improve Kidney Health, do the following
    • Wash 1 cup of barley well under water (just as you do rice until the water is clear)
    • After the barley begins to boil in the, reduce the heat and allow to simmer in an uncovered pan for roughly 20 minutes
    • Optional. Add cinnamon and ginger while simmering
    • Allow to cool
    • Optional. Add other ingredients like lime and honey after the barley water has cooled.
    • Strain through a very fine clothe
    • Store in refrigerator for no more than roughly 3 days.
    • Next morning, on an empty stomach (when it can have its greatest impact on the kidneys), drink 1 cup of the barley water
    • Consume up to a maximum of roughly 2 cups daily. Although barley is great, keep in mind that too much potassium in the body will interfere with the ideal levels of sodium.
