How to control overwhelm

Being overwhelmed occurs when life throws "passive challenges", ie challenges over which you did not actively create. In other words, being overwhelmed is about losing control to resolve challenges. Examples of passive challenges include accidents, health problems, harassment, burglar attacks and so on. Using contrast to better highlight the point, an active challenge is different because, even though it may be difficult, the fact that you actively chose it, creates a psychological cushion. Examples of 'active challenges' include learning a new skill or starting a business. When considering your life holistically, the state of overwhelm occurs when your 'passive challenges' outweigh your 'active' ones.

Why you need to deal with overwhelm

When faced with challenges outside of your control, the ensuing overwhelm is potentially destructive because it can push you into reacting emotionally, rather than responding more rationally. Besides, emotional decisions are often less productive.

How to overcome feelings of overwhelm

. Let me start with what not to do. Do not try to push even further with the idea that exerting even more effort will overcome your state because that is counterproductive. As mentioned above, being overwhelmed occurs when your 'passive challenges' outweigh 'active challenges'. In other words, there is an imbalance between the types. So if you have 2 'passive challenges', rather than try to push to resolve them, especially when you currently lack the wherewithal, seek balance between 'passive' and 'active challenges'. For instance, absolutely do NOT remove 'active challenges' as a mistaken attempt to devote more effort to the 'passive challenges' that already cause you negative emotions. Do you see how that pushes you further towards imbalance, a polar extreme of lost control over your life?

Consider feelings of being overwhelmed in terms of levels of control over your life, where overwhelm is on one polar extreme of lost control over your life. The key is to balance your lack of control with 'active challenges' that restore your sense of control. Fill your life with a routine of manageable 'active challenges'. Notice I underlined the word 'manageable'. Example(s)

While these 'active challenges' do not directly fix the externally generated 'passive' challenges, research has shown that 'active challenges' are nonetheless useful in restoring a better sense of balance mentally and emotionally. This is a critical side step that keeps you from a deep spiral of overwhelm that makes your mind consumed with your inability to resolve the challenge. As mentioned above, you want to avoid this because this state can even promote destructive behaviors. While this is counterintuitive, rest assured that science backs it up. On that note, I will end with a quote from Seneca the Young; "The mind should not be kept continuously at the same pitch of concentration, but given amusing diversions... Our minds must relax: they will rise better and keener after a rest."

  •  Dr Tracey Marks 'Understanding the dopamine detox: Is it real or hype?(above). When overwhelmed, it is easy to replace necessary tasks with addictive dopamine quick-hit behaviors like mindless television viewing, food binging, and so on. When in a rut, replace dopamine-hit addictions with more meaningful and productive activities like Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) techniques such as mindfulness meditation, even if it is dancing or coloring if your mind can not be quietened, Radical acceptance exercises, and so on. If time is short, mindfulness exercises can be more practical. For instance, dial in completely into whatever task you are doing, even if it is cleaning. NB Dr Marks explains that, overstimulation, even if pleasurable, is taxing on your mind and leave you more on edge. Consequently, downtime is necessary!

Summer Solstice

Astronomically speaking, the solstice is the first day of Summer. On this day, one of the Earth's poles (North or South) has its maximum tilt of 23.5 degrees away from its center and towards the Sun. For instance, when the Northern hemisphere is tilted towards the sun at that maximum tilt angle, it experiences its Summer solstice, the peak of its Summer. Specifically, that hemisphere has its longest sunlight exposure or 'day' and consequent shortest night. (BTW, Meanwhile the Southern hemisphere experiences the polar opposite, ie its winter solstice or shortest day of the year).

In other words, the summer solstice aka midsummer or litha marks the peak of sunlight in one of the polar hemispheres. Even physically, this solstice represents an undeniable influx of warmth. Energetically, since this phenomenon marks the most abundant sunlight during the year, it is believed to open a type of energetic portal. This portal represents different types of opportunity. For instance, since the sun's heat associates with the transformative element of fire and the third chakra of power, transformation and self-empowerment are points of celebration. Otherwise, it represents a point for celebration of abundance because not only has the harvest already begun but is still due to continue vigorously.

Taking cues from nature
The spiritual significance may be understood from within the context of gardening. Specifically, the solstice marks a gardener's peak. She has already done all of her planting and has already begun to harvest. However, she will continue to harvest until the end of Summer (around the Autumn equinox). So, she takes this time to give thanks for the harvest she has already received but especially what she is still going to harvest because it will become even more abundant from around this time because she is headed towards the peak harvest at the end of Summer (in the Autumn).

As a sidenote, this time is really worthy of showing gratitude because the polar opposite which she is not currently experiencing is occurring on the polar opposite side of the world, ie the winter solstice of cold and lack.

Responding to the Summer solstice

Common Summer solstice practices include the following. Throughout, colors may include yellow and gold to represent vitality, happiness and power. Associated keywords include fire, yellow, gold, abundance, gratitude, sunflowers, oak leaves.
  • Connect with nature. At safe times of the day (like sun rise or sun set), observe instances of abundance and collect items (like fruits, vegetables and wild flowers) for your altar. Example(s)
    • Walk barefoot on the ground and try to observe instances of abundance (a keyword) that associates with the moment.
    • At a safe time of day (like sunrise or sunset), sun gaze at the abundance of light
    • Ponder on the fruit of your endless 'to-do; lists and hard work.
    • Feast on what is currently abundant in your area; like vegetables, fruits and vegetables.
      • Sunflowers, other wild flowers
    • Make sun water. This involves placing a glass jug of pure water in the sun for several hours. However variations include placing: the image of the flower of life at the base  of the jug; quartz crystals in or around the water; wild leaves and flowers to make an infusion.
  • Clear your space physically, mentally and emotionally to make space for an abundant harvest.
  • Set up an altar that specifically honors the sun and the solstice. Here are some common adornment ideas.
    • Outdoor altar
    • Fire rituals. Example(s)
      • candle magick rituals
      • fire rituals
      • bonfire or other open fire activities
      • fire This may include indoor candle magick rituals or outdoor fire rituals.
    • Healing crystals. Use this auspicious time to charge crystals.
      • Work with crystals like Sunstone, citrine.
      • Charge only those crystals that can be charged in sunlight. Know those that can be charged but only for a limited time; like black tourmaline which should remain in the sunlight for no more than about 20 minutes (even on cloudy days).
    • Work with essential oils.
      • Work with peppermint.
  • Perform manifestation and personal power rituals
    • Gratitude for abundance. Ponder on your labor, even your ability to do that labor and be grateful for what you have achieved. Thank your spiritual team for their input.
      • Declarations of gratitude and abundance
        • I [your name, DOB] call upon my spiritual team. We have arrived for me to claim my inheritance destined to me to be [a painter, a business owner, etc]. I enjoy my inheritance in spirit and in flesh and across dimensions.

DNA activation

Human DNA is the template (or blueprint) for our design. Still unable to figure its function, scientists have labelled roughly 97% of human DNA as "junk". However, recent thinking has shifted to recognize that this majority part of our DNA seems linked to the spiritual aspects of ourselves; like the chakras and other bodies (which is why conventional science missed its functionality).

Conventional scientists have already observed that DNA can be activated and de-activated to produce significant physical changes. (See third party article about this). Similarly, activating spiritual DNA can lead to similarly transformative outcomes.

Benefits of activating spiritual DNA

  • heightened intuition
  • transcension of physical limitations

Background knowledge of epigenetics can help in explaining this. Epigenetics refers to how DNA interacts with small molecules within your cells, an interaction that can even turn on and off genes. While one's genetic sequence from birth does not change, environmental factors called 'marks' can be like computer program add-ons that change the expression of genes anyway. Common marks include diet, chemical exposure (including medication, environmental pollution, etc) and life experiences (including social experiences, psychological trauma, stress, nurture and so on). In other words, your life style habits can turn on and off genes (because of the existence and concentration of molecules that occur as a result). If you have a genetic predisposition for a specific disease but consistently expose yourself to good epigenetic marks (like diet), you can suppress the potential of that disease. Similarly, if your genetic makeup protects you from a disease but you consistently expose yourself to a bad epigenetic mark (like chemical pollutant), you can increase the chance of getting the disease. This is why genetically identical twins can have very different levels of health, age differently and so on.

A fascinating fact is that, when epigenetic changes occur, they can last because cells continue to divide with the new information. In other words, the changes can be lasting, which is why drastically different state of health can occur in twins, where one could develop major chronic disease while the other does not.

Just as you can inherit physical curses or blessings from relatives, apparently, so too can you do with psychological blessings and curses. While most epigenetics marks are erased at conception, some may survive not only a person's but even to the next generation. Major trauma caused through slavery, neocolonialism and so on to entire groups of people can impact off spring. Since there is a psychosomatic link to some diseases like type 2 diabetes, it is not surprising that black and Latino Americans experience a far higher incidence of the disease, not only through slavery in the case of black people, but the fact that oppressive patterns remain and were likely epigenetically passed on to the next generations of slave masters.

How to turn on DNA
  • During meditation, visualize the rebuilding of your DNA. Many parts of the DNA have been silenced by forces, known and unknown, even though those silenced parts have the potential to serve you in your quest for self-actualization and helping the planet. For instance, there may be (harmful 'epigenetic marks' like) trauma-based generational curses (like ongoing systemic oppression caused by white supremacy, etc) that stifle those strands of your DNA from inheriting your full destiny (like fulfilling your natural gifts). I do not know enough about the structure of DNA strands* to guide you on an accurate visualization of what is added and where. So, visualize what resonates with you. For instance, I have seen a space that is mostly dark and silent but in which lights settle in some places, as if silently doing their reparative work, I could not explain why I see the DNA that way (ie without helices), the positioning of the light or the science of what they do.
  • The physical DNA seems to the non-physical spirit world what the physical brain is to non-physical consciousness, aka the 'mind'. In other words, it is as if it has some type of telephone connection relaying epigenetic marks back and forth across the physical and non-physical dimensions of your soul. For this reason, acknowledge and pray for the repairs to occur across all dimensions (known and unknown and in spirit and in flesh).
  • You might also find it useful to also see how applying the hermetic principle of mentalism can maximize this process, (blockage-removing) spiritual burning banishment rituals, ancestral gifts through you and manifestation tools like the flutter breath of fire can amplify your objectives. Do this daily. As mentioned in the section on the hermetic principle of vibration, daily practice is a 'forced' vibration that pushes this intention out into the universe.

YouTube video by DoBetterForYourself Coach 'DNA activation: how I activate my DNA and increase my light (tips)'. Seeing the reactivation of her DNA as self-empowerment, this coach focuses on the solar plexus chakra. Specifically, she enjoys to do this while walking in sunshine and feeling the sunlight entering through her crown chakra. To her, just as dawning sunlight awakens many earthly beings, so too can the sunlight awaken her dormant DNA.

As accessories to this process, consider the following.
  • DNA music repair. Binaural beats of some musical frequencies like 528 Hz, ie one of the Solfeggio frequencies have been found to improve brain function and possibly cellular health. Other findings include a greater absorption of light waves.
  • Include DNA- protective or reparative foods like the following. See discussion on nutrigenomics:
    • Co-enzyme Q-10 protects against DNA damage
    • Kiwi fruit. Research suggests that 1 daily is protective. 3 daily may be reparative for pre-existing DNA damage. Dr Willian Li discusses kiwi
    • Strawberry, fresh lemon, apple, broccoli and celery have also been shown to have a protective effect on DNA
    • Ginger has a protective effect of DNA (by preventing the DNA damage that usually ensues from stress).
    • Dark chcocolate. Antioxidants found in dark chocolate like flavanoids and other polyphenols have been found to support DNA repair.

* Scientists understand the double helix DNA structure. While a helice looks like a single spiraling strand of hair, the double helix connects 2 of these strands. This is the imagery to which we have grown used when thinking about what the DNA looks like. However, there are far many more (than those 2) helices that comprise our DNA.
