Vitamin C Serum DIY

Vitamin C, specifically L ascorbic acid and ascorbic acid is among the most studied skin care ingredients with very good effects on skin. This posts explains how to make your own small batches of fresh vitamin C serum at home, ideally 5-20%, around 3.5 pH.

Uses & Benefits of DIY Vitamin C serum

  • Vitamin C promotes collagen production. (Collagen production has anti-aging effects on the skin)
  • Vitamin C can treat skin hyperpigmentation.
  • Vitamin C is antioxidative and therefore protects against some sun damage. (Contrary to popular belief, vitamin C can even be used in the sun and is not sun sensitive).
  • Store bought Vitamin C often oxides within only 1 week and can therefore be rendered ineffective over time, especially if not well formulated and containing sufficient stabilizers like vitamin E. You can therefore avoid this oxidation problem by making your own fresh serum in small batches that last for 1 week within a few minutes.
  • Because DIY vitamin C serum is cheap, you can actually use it on other parts of your body other than your face.

You will need the following to make DIY Vitamin C serum

  • L ascorbic acid (vitamin C) powder. L ascorbic acid, the most commonly used form of vitamin C used in cosmetics, can oxidize more easily than plain ascorbic acid.
  • Water, preferably distilled or dionized
  • Baking soda (to alkalinize the pH to be closer to your skin's pH to thereby reduce the potential sensitizing effect of vitamin C serum)
  • a funnel that fits into your bottle. Otherwise, a firm piece of paper that can be rolled into a cone and used as a makeshift funnel.
  • pH indicator (like pH strips)
  • a scale in grams. Otherwise, a small measuring spoon. Using volume-based measurements are not as precise. However, given the wide range of percentage points of vitamin C, there should not be any harm using volumetric measurements.
  • a small dark colored glass bottle, preferably with a dropper and an air-tight seal. You can also wrap the bottle in aluminum foil and place the bottle in a dark cupboard.

How to make DIY Vitamin C serum

  1. Decide on the strength you need. Most serums range from 3 - 25%. As a general rule, percentages below 10% are ideal for beginners. Many people begin to see benefits with percentages as low as 3 - 5%. Beware, in some cases, attempting to start too high might have diminishing returns because the potential sensitivity associated with a high percentage can have an overall negative effect on the skin.
  2. Note the capacity of your bottle. To do this, measure how much water fits into the otherwise empty bottle. Example 100g or 10 teaspoons (tsp)
  3. Calculate how much vitamin C powder to add. To do this, calculate the percentage by the capacity of your bottle. Example, if I want a 9% strength in a 100g or tsp bottle, my calculation will be 9 g or tsp L ascorbic acid, ie (9 / 100) x 100g. The remaining amount will be the water amount.
  4. Add enough water with which you can dissolve the vitamin C in the bottle by shaking it vigorously.
  5. Add the balance of the water and combine.
  6. Adjust the pH with the aim of a pH below 3.5. This is important to enhance the absorption of the vitamin C into the skin and to avoid the potential for irritation caused by the strong acidity of the vitamin C.
  7. Keep the bottle in darkness.

Using DIY Vitamin C serum

  1. Regarding combining vitamin C with other skin care products. When layering products onto the skin, apply the serum as close to the bare skin as possible (because vitamin C does not penetrate the skin very easily).. Avoid applying in combination with copper ions or benzoyl peroxide (as both will deactivate the ascorbic acid). If you have sensitive skin, it might be prudent to avoid combining with other potentially sensitizing ingredients like retinoids and exfoliating acids like alpha hydoxyacids. (Otherwise, these combinations are usually acceptable).
  2. Apply directly onto the skin, day or night. (Likely due to the photosensitivity of AHAs, it is a myth that vitamin C is photosensitive).
  3. As much as possible, minimize the exposure of your vitamin C serum to oxygen. To this end, close your container well between uses.
  4. If the serum turns yellow, it has oxidized. While it is not harmful, it is frustrating because it can stain your skin and has an unpleasant metallic smell.

Agar Agar a medicinal super food

Agar agar, aka kanten, seaweed gelatin, China grass, sea vegetable gelatin (gelatina vegetal). Agar agar is a sea weed extract that is mostly found in health food stores and supermarkets, especially Asian supermarkets in a white powder or thread form. The thread form looks like translucent plastic threads. Agar agar is also used as a vegan substitute for gelatin.
-- --
Uses of Agar Agar
  • Medicinally, agar has several applications. For instance, it is used as a mild laxative that can help in removing toxins, fats and sugar from the gut. Since it absorbs glucose from the stomach and passes through the gut quickly, agar agar is ideal for people with type 2 diabetes melitus. Additionally, it also absorbs cholesterol and is therefore good for lowering cholesterol. In fact, agar agar is even used as a more effective and vegan substitute for gelatin for treating bone, cartilage and joint damage. In fact, its use can prevent the need for operations like hip and knee replacement. Since it helps to regenerate tissue and organs, agar agar is even repairs kidney and heart damage. In fact, it is simply useful in the treatment of all diseases and injuries, including heart disease, cancer, Alzheimers and Parkinsons disease. Since agar agar can contribute to the reversal of any disease (and improvement of one's general health), its use may contribute to not needing / avoiding stem cell transplants (a common treatment for some types of cancer). Yes, it is also good estrogen-dependent cancers like breast cancer, ovarian tumors and uterine cancer. It is common for medical use to involve one serving daily for up to 2 months, 30 minutes before meals or 2 hours after meals. However, do NOT use agar agar if you have viral or bacterial infections (as it promotes microbial growth).
  • For weight loss and as a high fiber, vegan health food in ice cream, jelly desserts, meal replacement recipes, 'milk' thickeners and so on. As with any other algae, it is rich in iodine and trace minerals. It is often used for weight loss because it is free of sugar, carbs, fat and calories but has lots of fiber. Furthermore, agar agar is free from starch, soy, corn, gluten, yeast, wheat, milk, egg and preservatives. Agar allows you to create solid forms from liquids to the extent that the end product may be sliced with a knife, chewed and swallowed. Although having 0 calories, it has a slightly sweet taste. Although the taste of end products can be the same as gelatin (an animal product), agar agar renders end products with a different feel. For instance, agar agar products do not have the same soft and bouncy feeling as gelatin. Agar agar is commonly used to thicken soups, ice creams and to create fruit desserts. NB, Agar agar is free of taste, odor or color. NB it will not set in certain conditions, namely in wine, vinegar, distilled water, foods rich in oxalic acid (like chocolate, spinach, beets, beet greens, wheat germ, peanuts).
  • Cosmetically, agar agar can be used to soften and moisturize the skin and hair. It can therefore be used in soap, ointments, lotions and creams, especially since it has anti-wrinkling properties. It has been said to be used in toothpaste.

Agar Agar in Powder Form
Quantity to use is roughly 1 tsp powder : 1.3 cups liquid for a sold product that can be cut with a knife.
  • Add the powder to only cold water or other clear liquid that allows you to see how well it dissolves. (It will form clumps if added to hot water).
  • Whisk and bring to a boil until the powder is completely dissolved. Check whether the agar agar has completely dissolved by looking at the solution while it pours out of a spoon.
  • Continue whisking until the end to ensure the agar agar does not settle and create a gel layer at the bottom of the pot.
  • Dissolve sugar if you wish the sweet taste.
  • Turn off the heat and quickly add fruit puree (and lime to taste if you wish), tea, milk and or juice.
  • Pour into the mold while still hot. Get rid of air bubbles before the liquid cools and sets by stirring around them with a spoon and or tapping the bottom of a firm mold on a hard surface.
  • Add chunks of fruit and pieces of leaves (like mint for instance).
  • Allow to set either at room temperature or in the refrigerator. (Unlike gelatin, agar agar does not need to be refrigerated in order to set). If you wish to pour different layers, use a fork to stick holes in the first layer when it has already fully set before pouring the second layer. Do not worry about melting the first layer since agar agar does not melt easily with heat.

-- --

Agar Agar in Strand Form
Quantity to use is roughly 1/3 cup of chopped up strands : 1.3 cups liquid for a sold product that can be cut with a knife.
  • Soak the strands in cold water or  other clear liquid that allows you to see how well it dissolves for 15 minutes.
  • When soft and hydrated, simmer for roughly 5 minutes or until the pieces are completely dissolved.
  • Follow the steps used for the powder form after the powder is thoroughly dissolved in hot liquid. (See above)

Anti-Aging Toner & Daily Mist with Rice Water

Anti-Aging Toner & Daily Mist with Rice Water

Rice water is an anti-aging solution. This is mostly because it contains a nourishing substance called inositol that stimulates cell growth, tissue regeneration and blood flow. Consequently, rice water can also tighten pores and give the skin a glow. Due to its ability to absorb UV rays and bind with the skin’s copper, along with the fact that it contains antioxidants, rice water prevents the formation of melanin (the brown skin pigmentation) and, in turn age spots / hyper-pigmentation. In fact, it has been used for 'skin whitening' in many Asian countries. Further benefits include the fact that this rice water recipe treats acne and blemishes, clears redness and can even be used for the hair. (Also see the fermented rice water version for hair use).
-- --

To make anti-aging rice water skin toner, you will need

  • Rice; 1 part. Use any organic type. The rice water will contain antioxidants such as vitamin C and flavanoid compounds.
  • Water; 3 parts. If you are using green tea, this water should be used for steeping it.
  • Optional; organic green tea
  • Optional; vegetable glycerin. This is a humectant that I love using on my skin and hair. Beware however, a little goes a long way. Besides, using too much, too frequently might cause breakouts.
  • Optional; rose water
  • A mixing bowl
  • A strainer
  • A storage bottle
  • Cotton balls
  • A spray bottle if you wish to use the rice water as a daily mist
  • A clean wash cloth or paper towel if you wish to use the rice water as part of a facial mask

Remove age spots naturally with onion juice and liver health care

Age spots are freckles that begin to appear as one ages and or with considerable exposure to the sun. They are spots that stand out from the rest of your skin because they are darker. They appear on any ethnic group, including black skin. Consequently, the easiest way of identifying them is through the fact that they 'suddenly' appear as you age and stand out from the background on any part of the body that is exposed to sunlight, the face, shoulders, hands, back and so on. This post explains a home remedy as a natural alternative to chemical skin bleaching treatments for removing these spots.
-- --
Essentially, age spots are an external sign of oxidation within your body. However, they may be related to impaired liver function or nutritional deficiencies.

To prepare onion juice for age spots, you will need the following

  • onion.
    • Onion has antioxidant properties that neutralize free radicals
  • apple cider vinegar
    • Apple cider vinegar / ACV contains alpha-hydroxy acid, an ingredient that helps to remove the top layer of dead skin where many of the age spots are.
  • juicing implements
    • juicer - or -
    • 1) blender or mortar & pestle and 2) strainer or cheesecloth - or -
    • chopping knife, bowl and eating fork
  • cotton wool or dropper for extraction from the container and application to your skin
  • airtight container for storage
  • refrigeration for storage
--
--

Preparing onion juice for age spots

  • Blend and strain the onion and vinegar. Alternatively, process the onion in a juicer. If you have neither a blender nor juicer, chop up the onion as finely as possible and then use a fork to mash it with the apple cider vinegar. Allow the mixture to soak for a few hours before mashing again and straining.
  • Apply the juice with cotton wool. If you are applying this over your face, remember to include your neck and chess
  • Allow to remain on your skin for at least 30 minutes. There is no harm leaving it on overnight or all day for instance. However, onion juice has a strong smell of sulphur which may make it less than desirable. Having said this, I notice that, although I agonize over the smell, others can not detect it. I hazard a guess that others might detect the smell if you are in a hot, humid environment.
  • You may store the remainder in an airtight container for up to roughly 3 days
  • This apparently works within varying time periods. I have seen reports of people seeing results after 4 to 6 weeks of using this remedy every day.
  • Consider detoxing your liver. A truly naturopathic approach should not end at only tackling the problem at the superficial level of the skin but at the possible root cause, the liver. Consider liver enemas and other natural liver detox remedies.

How to make anti-aging facial moisturizer (with shea butter, coconut oil and grapeseed oil)

This is one of the ways that I make my own anti-aging facial moisturizer. It is best used on clean, damp skin to lock in the moisture. Its main ingredients, shea butter, coconut oil and grapeseed oil offer several health benefits for the skin.

Benefits of shea butter for skin
  • Shea butter reduces premature facial lines, dark spots, marks, stretch marks, scars, chapped lips
  • Shea butter has natural antioxidants that fight signs of aging in the skin
  • Shea butter is an intense skin moisturizer
  • Shea butter improves the elasticity of the skin for a more youthful appearance
  • Shea butter is high in essential fatty acids

Benefits of grapeseed oil for skin
  • Grapeseed oil is a powerful antioxidant that fights premature aging in the skin (to an extent that is greater than vitamins C and E)
  • Grapeseed oil is a natural sunscreen that fights premature aging in the skin
  • Grapeseed oil is light weight
  • Grapeseed oil fights acne
  • Grapeseed oil improves the elasticity of the skin for a more youthful appearance
-- --
Benefits of coconut oil for skin
  • Coconut oil repairs damaged skin
  • coconut oil is an effective moisturizer on all types of skins. This includes dry skin.
  • coconut oil is comparable with mineral oil but without potential adverse side effects on the skin. Coconut oil is therefore a safe natural substitute for mineral oil
  • coconut oil delays wrinkles and sagging of skin
  • Coconut oil treats several skin problems that include psoriasis, dermatitis and eczema
  • Coconut oil has antioxidant properties that help to prevent premature aging and degenerative diseases

WHAT YOU NEED TO MAKE MY ANTI-AGING FACIAL MOISTURIZER
  • Unrefined shea butter (at room temperature)
  • Unrefined coconut oil (at room temperature)
  • Grapeseed oil
  • Optional natural ingredients used to make anti-aging face moisturizer:
    • Zinc oxide (as a full spectrum sun block for skin. Just under 1/3 the combined volume of shea butter, coconut oil and grapeseed oil used. However, note that this natural physical sun block creates a white shield that becomes more visible with the amount of it that is added).
    • Beeswax (as a shield against harsh environmental factors and to seal in moisture)
    • Olive / almond oil
    • Jojoba oil
    • Essential oils (lavender oil)
  • Hand held mixer, whisk or fork
  • Mixing bowl
  • Sterile plastic bag
  • Storage jar. If you have any, use the beautiful empty containers of store bought skin care products.
  • Scissors

INSTRUCTIONS FOR MAKING MY ANTI-AGING FACIAL MOISTURIZER
  1. Liquefy the coconut oil before combining it with shea butter. Coconut oil liquefies at room temperature. If it is solid, expose the coconut oil to gentle heat. For instance, place the coconut oil container into a bowl of warm water or place it on a warm counter. I put my solid coconut oil on the kitchen counter close to my electric kettle.
  2. Gradually add coconut oil, grapeseed oil and other ingredients to the shea butter before combining. Add these ingredients while considering the desired consistency of your anti-aging face moisturizer. The oils will produce a smoother consistency that will allow you to easily spread otherwise solid shea butter over your face.
  3. To get your homemade shea butter / coconut oil face moisturizer to go neatly into a container, do the following. Put your homemade facial moisturizer into a sterile plastic bag. Squeeze the facial moisturizer into a single corner of the bag. Create a hole by cutting off the tip of that corner. This will allow you to squeeze the face moisturizer neatly into your container.
  4. Immediately after washing, cleaning and toning your skin, apply your anti-aging facial moisturizer on damp skin to lock in the moisture. It is not a good idea to apply moisturizer on dry or wet skin. If you apply moisturizer onto dry skin, you may lock out the moisture. If you apply moisturizer onto wet skin, your new anti-aging moisturizer may slip off of your face.
    1. Place a small amount (the size of a pea) of your homemade anti-aging moisturizer onto the palm of your hands. To get a small amount, you may use a tiny spatula if your storage container does not have a pump.
    2. Very gently rub your palms together about 2 to 3 times only, just to warm and spread the anti-aging facial moisturizer. This is useful to ensure that you apply a thin layer of moisturizer.
    3. Do not worry about not applying enough anti-aging face moisturizer onto your face. (You do NOT want to have too much anti-aging face moisturizer on your face. Using too much moisturizer on your face may look oily and block your pores.)
    4. Start to apply the anti-aging moisturizer to the drier parts of your face, usually your cheeks
    5. Remember to apply moisturizer to your neck and chest. However, this moisturizer may be too rich for the thin skin around your eyes.
  5. If you also need to apply makeup or sunblock to your skin, do so only AFTER your facial moisturizer has dried.

Vitamin C Serum for your skin

USES & BENEFITS OF HOMEMADE VITAMIN C SERUM FOR SKIN CARE
  • To extend the effectiveness of a vitamin C serum (through small production and quick use)
  • As a natural skin moisturizer and humectant, ie to restore water in the skin
  • As an antioxidant to fight against free radical skin damage commonly related to premature signs of aging like wrinkles
  • To promote natural production of collagen and elastin in the skin
  • To promote the skin's natural ability to heal itself
  • To protect against sun damage
  • To even out skin color irregularities
  • As a non toxic solution to healthy skin
  • As a less expensive alternative to commercial vitamin C serums

WHAT YOU NEED TO MAKE VITAMIN C SERUM FOR SKIN CARE
  • 1 tsp   Vitamin C (in the form of either L Ascorbic Acid powder OR Camu powder. The ultra fine powders can be easier to handle. Camu is an all natural alternative that is the most concentrated form of Vitamin C known.)
  • 1 tsp   Distilled Water
  • 1 tsp   Vegetable Glycerine

HOW TO MAKE VITAMIN C SERUM FOR SKIN CARE
  1. Mix all of the ingredients until the vitamin C powder if dissolved
  2. After cleaning your face and neck, rub the vitamin C serum between your clean, dry palms and then apply over your face and neck
  3. Leave on overnight
  4. Make this in small quantities and use all of the vitamin C quickly. This is important to ensure that the vitamin C serum does not become oxidized - a process that renders vitamin C serums less effective. (Powdered vitamin C is useful to reduce the chance of losing the effectiveness of a vitamin C serum).

OBSERVATIONS & QUESTIONS
  • When first applied, the vitamin C serum stings slightly.
  • I wanted to try using zinc oxide with this serum because it is a natural broad range sun block. However, unlike ascorbic acid and camu, it is not water soluble. Any thoughts or ideas?
